When anchoring in 5 metres of water at high water with 1.5m freeboard to the bow roller, what minimum scope (chain length) is generally recommended?

Q: In IALA Region A (UK, Europe, Africa, most of Asia), what does a port hand lateral mark look like?

Red can or pillar with flat top, red light (any rhythm) IALA Region A: port hand marks are RED, can/pillar shape, red light any rhythm. Keep them to port when entering harbour (coming from sea). Starboard hand marks are GREEN, conical, green light. Memory: "Red right returning" applies in Region B (Americas) — the OPPOSITE of Region A.

A. At least 3:1 in chain (20m), more in poor holding or bad weather — total depth including freeboard is 6.5m, so 3:1 = ~20m minimum

B. Scope only matters for rope — chain requires no calculation

C. 1:1 ratio is sufficient for overnight anchoring

D. 10:1 is required for all overnight anchoring
