Heavy Weather Aftermath - The Second Hazard (Module 2)
Training scenario based on a Hong Kong-registered chemical tanker
Chemical Tanker · Open sea, east of Ningbo · Not applicable (training extension)
Source: Based on Hong Kong MSIN 13/2026
The Situation
MODULE 2 — HYPOTHETICAL EXTENSION, not part of the Hong Kong notice. The wave has struck the forward deck of a chemical tanker at anchor in a gale. The casualties are being cared for. You are the Master and now you must make the ship safe: a damaged foam hose box, a displaced mooring rope, and an anchor under load.
The Lesson
Treat recovery as its own job with the same five checkpoints. Put a person on the ship as well as the casualties, keep the hazard area closed, and watch the anchor.
Human Element
The first accident is followed by pressure to tidy up the damage on the same exposed deck. The usual mistakes: attention only on the casualties, nobody watching the ship, the earlier assessment reused, and rescuers or repair parties sent into the same hazard.
Try the First Decision
PLANNING AND PREPARATION. MODULE 2 — HYPOTHETICAL EXTENSION, not part of the Hong Kong notice. You are the Master of the chemical tanker at anchor in the gale. The wave has struck; the casualties are being cared for and a helicopter is being arranged. On the forward mooring deck the sea has damaged the foam hose box, displaced a mooring rope and scattered the hose and nozzle. The ship is still at anchor in heavy weather and everyone's attention is on the casualties. You need a plan for the ship itself.
