Offshore Wind — Walk-to-Work

1. What / Why / How
During an active gangway crossing, someone is physically walking across a connected structure in real time. The consequence of unexpected vessel movement isn't just equipment or umbilical risk — it's an immediate personal fall/injury risk. Tolerance for uncommanded movement during an active crossing is effectively zero.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
A gust causing a brief movement that the gangway's motion compensation absorbs without incident isn't automatically a non-event. But: it's worth tracking as a real data point — if gusts are increasing in frequency or magnitude, that trend should inform whether transfers continue, independent of whether any individual gust caused a visible problem.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
Coordinate with the gangway operator/OIM on the gangway's own specific limits, which may be more conservative than the vessel's general DP capability — W2W has its own activity-specific ASOG distinct from general DP capability, and the decision needs both pictures combined.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
An intermediate response — pausing between individual crossings while conditions trend upward, rather than either continuing at full tempo or fully suspending — matches caution to the actual trend. If conditions exceed the agreed threshold, suspend fully; continuing because some crossings have succeeded erodes the margin one crossing at a time.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
Resuming needs sustained improvement, not a single favourable reading, plus confirmed gangway readiness. Trap: treating one good wind reading as equivalent to genuine, verified recovery — the same trap as an alarm clearing elsewhere in DP.
When the consequence of a DP performance issue is immediate personal injury rather than equipment damage, the same DP Academy principles apply with even less room for error — and demand active, continuous coordination with the activity-specific system, not DP operating in isolation.
Work the same situation through 8 linked decisions, with a real consequence at each step.
