Thruster — Loss of a Thruster

1. What / Why / How
Thrust allocation distributes demand across available thrusters based on direction, magnitude, saturation limits and each unit's current availability. Losing one thruster doesn't just remove a unit — it changes how the remaining thrusters have to share the load, at whatever heading and environment you currently have.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
Watch for: an unavailable/fault alarm, a feedback mismatch, a fixed-pitch or azimuth fault, rising load on the remaining units, or a reducing position/heading margin.
But: the immediate loss can be smaller than the failure's real impact once combined with your current heading and the environment — "one thruster down" reads very differently depending on which direction it was pointing.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
Confirm your actual available capability and configuration with the fault present, assess your post-failure margin against your activity's controls, and determine the required operational state — not just whether position is presently being held.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
Wind veers into the sector the lost thruster would have covered. Use the updated capability picture, not the original one, and communicate the change before a further failure forces the issue.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
Declare the thruster recovered only following authorised return, functional validation across its range, and a genuine effect-check on redundancy/capability. Trap: "we still have enough thrust" as a verdict that skips heading, transients and your Worst Case Failure assumption.
A single thruster loss can silently move you from "redundancy in reserve" to "operating at your assumed worst case." Recognising that shift — not just confirming the vessel is still on position — is what real DP judgement is being tested on.
