1. What / Why / How
Running an ROV on a long umbilical near a subsea structure often needs a tight relative position, not just an absolute one. Excessive or erratic vessel movement — even within otherwise acceptable DP limits — can translate into umbilical strain, snagging risk, or the ROV losing its own reference. Movement quality, not just whether it's within a tolerance band, is operationally significant.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
Minor, non-alarming positional noise, well within normal DP tolerance, can still produce repeated umbilical tension changes or ROV station-keeping difficulty during close work. But: don't assume the ROV team's silence means everything is fine — confirm directly whether they've noticed any effect; they may be compensating manually without flagging it under task focus.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
If the ROV pilot confirms they're making small manual corrections, treat that as genuinely useful operational feedback — even within tolerance, active compensation is real information about the vessel's movement quality, worth investigating rather than dismissing because no formal limit has been breached.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
Adjusting reference weighting or selection in response to that feedback, then confirming reduced compensation is needed, closes the loop between the vessel's internal tolerance view and the task-specific consequence being experienced by the team it supports.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
“Within DP tolerance” and “genuinely adequate for this specific task” are related but different standards. Trap: treating a formal tolerance band as the only meaningful threshold and dismissing task-level feedback that falls short of it.
Active communication with the team being supported is itself a source of real operational information, on top of everything the DP system's own instruments report. A good DPO treats that feedback as seriously as an internal alarm.
