Power — Generator Trip

1. What / Why / How

Generation, bus configuration, load sharing, spinning reserve, protection and load-shedding all interact to keep power available to the thrusters that keep the vessel on position. A generator trip is a power-system event first, and a DP-capability event second — both need assessing, not just the first.

2. Recognition / Risk / But

Watch for: the trip itself, rising load on remaining generators, a bus-tie configuration change, automatic load shedding, lost thrusters, or a low-reserve alarm.

But: a successful automatic PMS response can still leave you in an unacceptable redundancy configuration — "the system recovered smoothly" answers the electrical question, not the DP operational-risk question.

3. Now / What next / Decision / Why

Establish the actual generation/distribution state, how much reserve genuinely remains, and the effect on your DP equipment. Compare this against your approved operating mode and your activity's decision-support tool (ASOG).

4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate

A second generator is slow to synchronise; thrust limits start to appear. Manage the evolving capability picture and commit to escalation — don't assume restoration is imminent just because it's underway.

5. Recover / Verify / Human factor

Recovery requires verified stable generation, correct configuration, confirmed protection state, and post-failure readiness in line with your approved process. Trap: production/commercial pressure to continue on a temporarily narrow margin — a schedule doesn't change what the electrical system can actually deliver.
