DP Fundamentals — What DP Actually Does

1. What / Why / How
Dynamic Positioning automatically controls a vessel's position and/or heading using control computers, reference systems and sensors, power, and thrust. The control loop is continuous: setpoint → observation/model → error → thrust allocation → vessel response — measured, compared and corrected many times a second, not set once and left alone.
DP is a system, not a single button. Every layer — references, sensors, the control computer, power generation, thrusters — has to keep contributing correctly for the loop to keep working.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
High thrust demand, growing position error, sensor disagreement and power limitation are four different observations, not interchangeable symptoms of "something's wrong." Learning to read which one you're seeing is the first real DP skill.
But: a perfectly stable display can mask reduced redundancy or a poor reference underneath it. "The number looks fine" is not the same as "the system is healthy."
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
Before deciding whether normal operation remains appropriate, establish: the current operation and DP mode, which references/sensors are actually selected, equipment status, environmental trend, remaining margin, and what your applicable operating guidance (ASOG) requires at this point.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
An apparently minor reference discrepancy can develop into an increasing model/reference split over time. When that happens, reassess data integrity and operational margin, and inform the watch/command chain according to the operation — don't wait for the discrepancy to become an alarm before treating it as real.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
Recovery means restored, independently credible inputs and an agreed operating configuration — not merely a low position-error number on the display. Trap: automation bias — "DP is holding, so it must be safe" is exactly the assumption that lets a quiet, underlying problem go unnoticed.
A DPO's job is to understand the loop well enough to know when the display's calm doesn't match the system's actual state underneath it — and that habit is the foundation every other DP Academy guide builds on.
