Fire & Flooding Affecting DP Systems
Topic: DP Emergencies · Sub-topic: Fire/Flooding · Level: DPO / Senior DPO · Read time: 9 min
1. What / Why / How
A fire or flooding event in a space housing DP-relevant equipment is a genuine dual emergency: a life-safety event in its own right, and a potential DP capability event, since firefighting actions themselves (space isolation, de-energising circuits) can remove DP-relevant equipment from service. The DPO's assessment has to track both dimensions together.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
DP capability may be actively changing as the emergency response unfolds — an isolation action taken for firefighting reasons can remove exactly the equipment DP capability depends on. But: don't assume DP capability is unaffected just because no DP alarm has activated yet — actively cross-check with the bridge team/emergency coordinator about which spaces and systems are affected.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
If a generator's switchboard room is being isolated as a precaution, before the generator itself trips, treat that as a strong leading indicator and proactively prepare the operational response — don't wait for the trip itself.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
During a genuine dual emergency, DP-relevant consequences can develop faster than in an isolated equipment fault. A DPO who waits for the DP system to reflect a consequence that firefighting information already predicted accepts an avoidable delay.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
The fire being declared out is not itself confirmation DP capability is restored. Verify the specific equipment that was isolated is functionally restored and validated — a space being safe to re-enter doesn't mean every piece of equipment in it survived undamaged. Trap: treating the firefighting all-clear as a DP all-clear.
Some emergencies are genuinely dual in nature. Active cross-communication between the emergency response and the DP assessment — rather than waiting for DP's own instruments to catch up — is what keeps the picture current enough for good decisions in a fast-moving, high-consequence situation.
Work the same situation through 8 linked decisions, with a real consequence at each step.
