Power — Blackout

1. What / Why / How
A total blackout means all generators trip, all thrusters lose power, and DP control is lost entirely — not degraded, gone. The first priority is recognising this as a total loss of position-keeping capability requiring immediate safety actions per the emergency response plan, while the engine room begins blackout recovery in parallel.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
The risk beyond position loss itself: uncontrolled drift under wind/current toward nearby structures, other vessels, subsea infrastructure or personnel in the water/subsea. But: before assuming recovery follows a predictable pattern, confirm whether your vessel's procedure requires a specific black-start sequence — restoration is typically staged, not instant.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
As power returns in stages — one generator online, partial thrusters — assess actual restored capability against current conditions and vessel drift/position before making any decision to resume DP control. Partial power doesn't mean full capability.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
Full power restored and holding position doesn't end the event: verify actual current position/heading against where the vessel should be, confirm root cause is understood (not just that power returned), and complete a full incident report.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
Even a root cause found to be a mere nuisance trip doesn't make the event less worth reviewing — the vessel's actual response is exactly as valuable to examine regardless of how serious the underlying cause turns out to be. Trap: treating restored position-holding as proof the event is fully closed.
Blackout removes DP control entirely rather than degrading it. The DPO's role shifts from managing capability to managing immediate safety consequences, then to a careful, staged reassessment during recovery — never an instant return to normal.
