Seafarers Happiness Index Q2 2026: When Acute Shock Becomes Chronic Strain

The Mission to Seafarers' Seafarers Happiness Index has fallen to 6.87 out of 10 for Q2 2026, down from 7.18 in Q1. The story behind the number matters as much as the number itself: Q1 was dominated by the acute shock of conflict disruption in the Persian Gulf. Q2 shows something arguably harder to fix — that disruption settling into routine.

Shore Leave Is Now the Worst-Scoring Category

Shore leave scored 5.72 this quarter, the lowest of any category by a significant margin. Short port stays, restricted terminal access, and packed schedules are cutting into time on land — and seafarers are naming it directly: sufficient rest, connectivity with family, decent food, and pay that reflects the sacrifice being asked of them.

The One Bright Spot

Interactions scored 7.49 — the highest category this quarter, and one of the report's few genuinely encouraging findings. Relationships on board, it seems, are holding up even as the operational conditions around them get harder.

Why "Chronic Strain" Is the Right Framing

The shift in language from the Mission to Seafarers matters. An acute shock has a clear before-and-after; a workforce can point to the disruption and expect it to pass. Chronic strain doesn't work that way — it's the sense that disruption has simply become the operating environment, not an exception to it. That's a harder problem for operators and welfare organisations to solve, because there's no single fix to point at.
