During a tack, a cadet's finger gets trapped between the sheet (rope) and the winch as it is loaded up. They cry out in pain. What is the first thing to do?

A. Immediately ease the sheet (let the rope go slack) to release the pressure on the trapped finger — this is far more urgent than anything else in the first few seconds

B. Finish the tack first, then deal with the finger afterwards

D. Cool the finger with a cold compress or cloth wrapped around something cold (not ice directly on the skin) for around 10-15 minutes; keep the hand raised if comfortable to reduce swelling; give pain relief from the first aid kit if appropriate and the casualty is able to take it safely
