The crew are nervous and the fog shows no sign of lifting. Should the skipper make a radio call?

A. No — radio calls should be saved only for genuine emergencies, never simply to inform someone of your situation

B. Yes — even a simple call to the Coastguard giving your position and situation (sailing in fog, proceeding carefully towards harbour) is good practice. They may also be able to warn you of other known traffic in the area

C. Switch the VHF off to save the battery since nothing has gone wrong yet

D. Wait until visibility is at zero before calling anyone

A. Speed up to get out of the fog area as quickly as possible

B. Carry on at the same speed since fog does not affect a small sailing boat

C. Stop the boat completely and wait without doing anything else

D. Slow down to a safe speed for the visibility, and get the boat's position fixed and written down (from GPS or the last known landmark) right away, before it gets harder to tell exactly where you are

A. There is no need for an extra lookout — the skipper at the helm can see everything that matters

B. Turn off all lights to avoid attracting attention from other vessels

C. Have everyone go below decks to stay warm and dry until the fog clears
