Maritime Questions › Safety & Emergency
Your examiner asks: "What must be recorded in the GMDSS radio log, and how does this differ from the deck log?"
A. SOLAS Chapter IV requires a record to be kept of all incidents connected with the radiocommunication service that appear to be of importance to safety of life at sea. In practice, this includes: a summary of all distress, urgency, and safety communications involving the ship (both transmitted and received); any distress alerts relayed by the ship; acknowledgements of distress calls and communications received from SAR authorities; the ship's position at appropriate intervals (as required); results of tests carried out on GMDSS radio equipment (including the reserve source of energy); and importantly, the TIME AND METHOD of cancellation of any inadvertent (false) distress, urgency, or safety transmission. This is DISTINCT from the general deck log, which records the ship's navigational and operational activity more broadly — the radio log is specifically focused on radiocommunication service incidents relevant to safety of life at sea.
B. The radio log and the deck log are the same document, with SOLAS Chapter IV imposing no separate or distinct radiocommunication recording requirement.
C. The radio log need only record successful, non-emergency routine communications; distress and urgency traffic, and false alert cancellations, need not be logged at all.
D. Radio equipment test results are excluded from the radio log requirement and instead belong exclusively in the ship's engine log.
