Maritime Questions › Safety & Emergency
A new AB joins your vessel the day before departure. Your examiner asks: "What does SOLAS Chapter III require regarding this crew member's familiarisation with the ship's survival equipment, and when must it happen?"
A. SOLAS Chapter III requires that every crew member be given proper instruction and familiarisation in the use of the ship's life-saving appliances, including survival craft equipment, BEFORE the voyage begins or as soon as possible after joining — a new joiner should not go to sea without knowing how to don a lifejacket/immersion suit, locate and access their assigned survival craft, and understand their basic emergency duties. This is distinct from (and precedes) the formal monthly drill cycle — familiarisation is an individual, joining-related obligation, not something that can simply wait for the next scheduled drill weeks later.
B. Familiarisation is only required for officers; ratings joining the vessel are automatically assumed to be familiar with all survival equipment based on their certificate of competency alone, with no ship-specific induction required.
C. A new crew member need not be familiarised with survival equipment until they have completed one full month on board and participated in the next scheduled monthly drill — there is no requirement for earlier individual instruction.
D. Familiarisation with survival equipment is entirely at the discretion of the individual crew member and is not a SOLAS Chapter III obligation on the master or company.
