You are overtaking a vessel at night. How do you determine that you are the overtaking vessel, and what are your obligations? What signals apply?

A. Rule 13: a vessel is deemed to be overtaking when coming up with another vessel from a direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam (the arc of the sternlight). If in doubt as to whether you are overtaking, you shall assume you are the overtaking vessel. The overtaking vessel shall keep out of the way until the other is finally past and clear. Rule 9(f) signals apply in a narrow channel if the ahead vessel needs to take action.

B. Rule 13 defines overtaking as approaching from any direction at a higher speed. The rule only applies if you intend to pass within 0.5 nm of the other vessel.

C. The overtaking rule applies only to vessels proceeding in the same direction. If you are faster and on a converging course, Rules 15 or 16 apply instead.

D. Rule 13 requires the overtaking vessel to sound two long blasts and one short blast before passing. The vessel being overtaken sounds one long blast in reply.

A. The tidal height at the time of transit to confirm sufficient under-keel clearance

B. The yacht's fuel consumption for that leg

C. The colour of the seabed shown on the chart

D. Only the distance to the next waypoint

A. Switch the ECDIS to standby mode and navigate by GPS position alone

B. Ignore it — ECDIS alarms are frequently false and can be left running

C. Assess the situation against the planned route and charted depths, take action to maintain safe water, and inform the Master if there is any doubt

D. Acknowledge and silence the alarm immediately so it does not distract the helmsman
