A classification society surveyor identifies a deficiency that requires the vessel to be restricted to a smaller area of operation until repairs are completed at the next suitable port. As Master, what is your obligation?
A. Comply with the restriction — operating outside the conditions of the vessel's certificate would invalidate insurance cover, breach flag-state requirements, and expose the Master to personal liability; the owner/charterer must be informed of the restriction and the itinerary adjusted accordingly
B. Only inform the owner after the charter is complete
C. Class society restrictions are advisory only and have no legal weight
D. Ignore the restriction if the owner insists the vessel must complete the current charter as planned

A. The Master may only render assistance after receiving written authorisation from the company
B. The duty to render assistance does not apply if the persons are suspected irregular migrants — the Master may legally ignore them and continue on passage
C. The duty to render assistance to persons in distress at sea overrides immigration status considerations at the point of rescue; the Master must rescue and provide for their safety, while disembarkation arrangements and any immigration questions are a separate matter to be coordinated afterward with flag state, coastal state authorities and the company/DPA
D. Rendering assistance is discretionary and depends on whether the vessel has spare cabins
