During a voyage you discover a crack in the hull plating below the waterline in a void space. Flooding is slow but progressive. Describe your immediate damage control response.

A. Immediate: inform master and chief engineer; sound the bilge and adjacent compartments to establish the extent of flooding; close all watertight doors in the vicinity to contain flooding to one compartment; do NOT open manhole covers to the void without assessing risk; deploy damage control equipment — wooden wedges, softwood plugs, collision mats if available, quick-setting cement; activate bilge pump for the affected space; assess trim, heel, and reserve buoyancy from the stability booklet damage information; prepare for possible MAYDAY and anchor in shallow water if deterioration continues. Report to MRCC if the situation is beyond the vessel's capacity to manage.
B. Flood the adjacent compartment to equalise pressure and stop the ingress through the crack.
C. Apply hull tape from outside using a diver. This is the approved temporary repair for sub-waterline hull cracks.
D. The void space is designed to be wet and requires no action. Flooding in void spaces is normal and the bilge system will manage it.

A. The fire triangle requires three elements simultaneously: heat (ignition source), fuel (combustible material), and oxygen. Remove any one element and the fire goes out. Classes: Class A — solids (wood, rope, bedding) — water, foam, dry powder; Class B — flammable liquids (fuel oil, paint, solvents) — foam, CO2, dry powder; Class C — flammable gases (LPG, acetylene) — dry powder, shut off supply first; Class D — combustible metals (magnesium, titanium, sodium) — specialist dry powder only; Class F (electrical equipment) — CO2, dry powder — NEVER water. Note: electrical fires are sometimes classed separately rather than as a fire class.
B. The fire triangle requires fuel and oxygen only. Heat is automatically generated by combustion and cannot be removed independently. There are two classes of fire: liquid and solid.
C. Class A fires are fought with CO2 only. Class B fires require water fog. Class C fires use dry powder. This sequence applies to all shipboard fires.
D. Water is the universal firefighting medium for all classes of fire at sea. Foam and CO2 are supplementary agents used only when water is unavailable.

Flame detectors: detect infrared or ultraviolet radiation from open flames — effective in machinery spaces with high background heat. Gas/carbon monoxide detectors: detect CO as an early indicator of smouldering fires. SOLAS II-2/7 requires automatic fire detection and alarm systems in crew accommodation, service spaces, control stations, and cargo spaces as appropriate.
B. SOLAS requires only heat detectors on cargo ships. Smoke detectors are for passenger vessels only. All detectors must be tested annually.
C. A single type of detector (smoke) is approved by SOLAS for use in all spaces on all ship types. Variation between spaces is not permitted.
D. Fire detection on cargo ships is provided exclusively by the ship's fire patrol — electronic detection systems are optional additional equipment.
