At 0400 the fire detection system alarms for No.2 cargo hold. The hold contains a general cargo consignment. You are OOW. Describe your immediate actions.

A. Sound general alarm; call master; post personnel at the hold access to prevent unauthorised entry; check the nature of the alarm (smoke, heat, or CO detector); do NOT open the hatch — opening the hatch introduces oxygen and can cause backdraft or flashover. Check adjacent hold temperatures and spaces. Close ventilation to the hold. Inform chief officer and chief engineer. Muster emergency team in full PPE with BA sets ready. B. Open the hatch to investigate visually before sounding the alarm — the detection system may be giving a false alarm.
C. Apply water to the hatch top immediately using the fire hose to cool the deck. Open the hatch 10 minutes later when the deck temperature is reduced.
D. Sound the alarm and wait for the master to arrive before taking any action. The OOW has no authority to activate fire systems without the master's order.

D. Fire detection on cargo ships is provided exclusively by the ship's fire patrol — electronic detection systems are optional additional equipment.
