Maritime Questions › Enclosed Space Whatif
A rating has collapsed inside a pump room. You are the duty officer. You arrive to find two ABs about to climb down without breathing apparatus to rescue him. A third AB is standing by at the top of the ladder. There is no SCBA immediately at hand. What do you order?
A. Pass a line down to the casualty and have the ABs enter briefly to attach it
B. Allow entry if the job is completed in under 90 seconds — hypoxia takes longer than that to cause loss of consciousness
C. Stop the ABs from entering. Sound the general alarm to muster the emergency team with BA. A rescue without BA in an atmosphere that has already incapacitated one person will produce additional casualties. You cannot help the first casualty by creating more
D. Allow the ABs to enter — two people are more likely to drag him out quickly before the atmosphere affects them

A. Allow it — two minutes is too short for hypoxia to develop in a space he knows well
B. Allow it provided he leaves the door open and someone waits at the top of the ladder
C. Stop him. No entry is permitted without a valid atmosphere test and an authorised Enclosed Space Entry permit, regardless of familiarity with the space or duration of entry
D. Allow it — the pump room is not classed as a confined space if it has two means of access

A. Retest in 30 minutes to confirm stability, then enter without testing lower levels
B. No further steps are needed — all readings are within acceptable parameters
C. Proceed on the basis that 18 days of natural ventilation will have normalised the atmosphere throughout
D. The atmosphere must also be tested at lower levels within the space — at working depth and at the bottom. A safe reading at the entry point does not guarantee safe conditions deeper in the hold
