Maritime Questions › Enclosed Space Whatif
Pre-entry checks are complete. A competent AB enters the cargo hold and descends 3 metres. He calls up on the radio: "Feeling a bit light-headed but I'll push on — I think it's just the heat." The standby person looks to you for guidance. What is the immediate action?
A. Tell him to rest for a minute — the dizziness may be due to the heat, not the atmosphere
B. Order immediate evacuation. Dizziness during ESE is an emergency signal — it may indicate the atmosphere has changed or the test at depth was inadequate. The person must exit now under their own power while they still can
C. Send the standby person in to assist and assess
D. Ask him to climb up one level and report back on whether the dizziness improves

A. Allow it — two minutes is too short for hypoxia to develop in a space he knows well
B. Allow it provided he leaves the door open and someone waits at the top of the ladder
C. Stop him. No entry is permitted without a valid atmosphere test and an authorised Enclosed Space Entry permit, regardless of familiarity with the space or duration of entry
D. Allow it — the pump room is not classed as a confined space if it has two means of access

A. Retest in 30 minutes to confirm stability, then enter without testing lower levels
B. No further steps are needed — all readings are within acceptable parameters
C. Proceed on the basis that 18 days of natural ventilation will have normalised the atmosphere throughout
D. The atmosphere must also be tested at lower levels within the space — at working depth and at the bottom. A safe reading at the entry point does not guarantee safe conditions deeper in the hold
