Your examiner asks: "What is the difference between intact stability and damage stability, and what does SOLAS Chapter II-1 require for cargo ship damage stability?"
A. Intact stability: the ability of the vessel to return to an upright position when heeled in its undamaged condition — governed by GM, GZ curves, and IS Code 2008 criteria. Damage stability: the ability of the vessel to remain afloat and upright after flooding of one or more compartments following damage — governed by SOLAS Chapter II-1 Regulations 7-7.3 (probabilistic method for new ships) or Regulation 6 (deterministic method for older ships). SOLAS II-1 Reg 7 (probabilistic method): the attained subdivision index A must equal or exceed the required subdivision index R, which depends on ship type, length, and number of persons. The R value is higher for passenger ships and lower for cargo ships. The damage stability booklet on board shows permitted loading conditions that maintain compliance.
B. Damage stability is only required for passenger ships. Cargo ships only need to demonstrate intact stability under the IS Code.
C. Damage stability and intact stability are the same calculation performed under different loading conditions.
D. SOLAS damage stability requirements were removed in 2010 and replaced entirely by the IS Code 2008 which covers both intact and damaged conditions.

A. Before loading Class 5.2 organic peroxides: verify the Dangerous Goods Declaration is complete and accurate (UN number, proper shipping name, class, packing group, flashpoint, emergency contact). Check the IMDG Code entry for MEKP Type C — organic peroxides have temperature control requirements (SADT — self-accelerating decomposition temperature) and require controlled temperature stowage. Verify the shipper has provided a Certificate of Analysis confirming temperature control requirements are met. Check segregation against other cargo — Class 5.2 must be segregated from flammable materials. Confirm the ship has the required equipment (temperature monitoring, fire extinguishers of correct type). Inform master and company if any requirements cannot be met. The Chief Mate signs the cargo receipt — this is a legal acknowledgement of receipt in apparent good order.
B. Accept the declaration at face value and load per the cargo plan. Organic peroxides in drums are routine general cargo.
C. Class 5.2 cargoes require flag state approval before loading. The Chief Mate should halt operations and contact the MCA.
D. The terminal is responsible for verifying dangerous goods declarations. The Chief Mate's only obligation is to sign the cargo manifest on completion of loading.

A. Bulk carrier structural hazards: transverse frames and frames at the lower hopper angles are susceptible to corrosion — section loss reduces capacity to withstand cargo and water pressure; topside tank inner structure (frames, longitudinals) can corrode from condensation; hold bilge systems can become blocked leading to flooding; hatch coaming knees and corners are high-stress areas prone to cracking. C. Structural inspection is exclusively the classification society's role. The Chief Mate has no obligation to inspect holds for structural condition — only for cleanliness and damage to cargo.
D. Bulk carrier structural hazards only arise after 25 years of service. A 15-year-old vessel is within normal service life and no enhanced inspection is required.
