Canned goods from the Canaries arriving in Rotterdam in winter: the cargo is warm; Rotterdam air is cold — cargo sweat risk is high; SHIP SWEAT — moisture condensing on the SHIP's structure (deckheads, frames) and then dripping onto cargo. Occurs when moist warm sea air enters the hold and the ship's steel surfaces are colder; (4) VENTILATION RECORDS: during the voyage, the OOW should have applied the ventilation rule: ventilate if the dew point of outside air is BELOW the dew point of the hold air. Cold outside air is typically drier — so ventilating into cold conditions removes moisture from the hold. If this was not done correctly, the Chief Officer must identify this from the log; (5) NOTE PROTEST: if not already noted, note a Sea Protest regarding the voyage conditions.
B. Moisture damage is always caused by the shipper packing wet cargo. Refuse any survey until the shipper provides evidence that the cargo was dry when loaded. Do not engage the P&I Club.
C. Moisture damage from condensation is specifically excluded from the carrier's liability under the Hague-Visby Rules in all cases — no action is needed as the carrier has a complete defence.
D. Conduct the survey without involving the P&I Club or company. As Chief Officer you have authority to settle cargo damage claims under £10,000 without involving the P&I.

B. Dangerous goods documents are the shipping agent's responsibility. As Chief Officer, accept the cargo once the agent confirms the DGD is complete and store it anywhere convenient.
C. Class 2.3 toxic gas can be stowed adjacent to Class 8 corrosives provided they are in separate compartments on the same deck. No minimum distance is required below deck.
D. Dangerous goods on vessels under 3000 GT are exempt from IMDG Code requirements. The IMDG Code only applies to vessels of 3000 GT and above.

B. A moisture content of 24% is below 100% so the cargo cannot liquefy. Load the cargo and complete voyage normally.
C. Conduct your own can test on a sample of the cargo. If the sample does not flow in the can, the cargo is safe to load regardless of the moisture content certificate.
D. Liquefaction only applies to iron ore fines — nickel ore fines are a solid mineral cargo and are not subject to IMSBC moisture limits.
