A. SOLAS VI/2 amendments (in force 1 July 2016): every packed container must have a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) declared by the shipper before it can be loaded onto a ship. The VGM is obtained by either: Method 1 — weigh the packed container on a calibrated instrument; or Method 2 — weigh all cargo items, packaging, and materials plus the tare weight of the container using a certified method. A container without a VGM declaration cannot be loaded. The terminal and ship must use the VGM in the stability and stow plan. Misdeclared container weights are directly linked to structural failures, crane collapses, and vessel stability incidents.
B. VGM applies only to containers on passenger vessels. Cargo ship container operations use the shipper's declared weight from the bill of lading.
C. VGM must be verified by a flag state official at the port of loading. Shipper self-certification is not accepted under SOLAS VI/2.
D. A container without a VGM may be loaded provided it is stowed below deck. Deck stowage requires VGM; underdeck stowage is exempt.

Class 3: Flammable liquids (petrol, acetone). Class 4: Flammable solids — 4.1 Flammable solids (matches), 4.2 Spontaneously combustible (wet fishmeal), 4.3 Dangerous when wet (sodium, calcium carbide). Class 5: Oxidising substances — 5.1 Oxidisers (ammonium nitrate), 5.2 Organic peroxides. Class 6: Toxic and infectious — 6.1 Toxic (pesticides), 6.2 Infectious substances. Class 7: Radioactive. Class 8: Corrosives (battery acid, caustic soda). Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods (lithium batteries, dry ice).
B. There are six classes: explosives, flammables, toxics, radioactive, corrosives, and miscellaneous. Each class has one example cargo only.
C. IMDG classes apply to packaged goods only. Bulk cargoes such as LPG and chemicals in tankers are covered by the IBC Code only.
D. The IMDG Code has ten classes. Class 10 covers nuclear waste and is restricted to state-operated vessels only.

You are loading a general cargo consignment. The cargo plan shows ammonium nitrate (Class 5.1) in Hold 2 and petroleum products in drums (Class 3) in Hold 3, which is adjacent. Is this acceptable under the IMDG Code?
A. Ammonium nitrate (Class 5.1, oxidiser) and petroleum products (Class 3, flammable liquids) require segregation of "away from" (separated by an intervening space or hold) at minimum. Adjacent holds sharing a common bulkhead do not satisfy "away from" — the cargoes must be in non-adjacent holds with at least one hold separation. Check the IMDG Segregation Table (Chapter 7.2): oxidisers and flammable liquids require at minimum "away from" and in some cases "separated from." This loading plan requires amendment.
B. Adjacent holds with a steel bulkhead between them satisfy all IMDG segregation requirements for any combination of dangerous goods.
C. Ammonium nitrate and petroleum products are compatible and may be stowed in the same hold provided they are separated by a 1-metre gap.
D. IMDG segregation applies to Class 1 (explosives) only. For other classes, stowage is at the master's discretion.
