SOPEP is mandatory for ships of 400 GT+ (and all oil tankers 150 GT+) under MARPOL Annex I Regulation 37. Examiners regularly ask candidates to demonstrate they have actually read their own ship's plan — common follow-ups include "what do you update and how often" (the national contact list is a common periodic-update item) and "what would you do if SOPEP equipment was deployed during a collision/grounding," testing whether the candidate treats it as a real working document, not paperwork.
