Ships of 400 GT and above must carry an Oil Record Book (Part I, machinery space operations) and a SOPEP (Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan); tankers of 150 GT+ also need Part II (cargo/ballast operations). All oil tankers and ships of 400 GT+ must hold an IOPP (International Oil Pollution Prevention) Certificate. Oil filtering equipment/oily water separator is required, generally limited to discharging at no more than 15 ppm oil content outside special areas. MARPOL Annex I applies the IOPP Certificate and Oil Record Book requirement to ships of 400 GT and above (oil tankers 150 GT+ for cargo operations, Part II). SOPEP is mandatory for ships of 400 GT+ (and all oil tankers 150 GT+) under MARPOL Annex I Regulation 37. Examiners regularly ask candidates to demonstrate they have actually read their own ship's plan — common follow-ups include "what do you update and how often" (the national contact list is a common periodic-update item) and "what would you do if SOPEP equipment was deployed during a collision/grounding," testing whether the candidate treats it as a real working document, not paperwork.
