A Capsize That Should Have Been Recoverable
During an RYA Sailability session on Windermere, an RS Venture Connect keelboat capsized in windy conditions, crewed by an assistant instructor and a disabled crew member with limited mobility. In a normal capsize, this boat is designed to be recoverable — its retractable keel, when properly secured, provides the righting moment needed to bring it back upright. That day, it wasn't secured.
The Strap That Wasn't Checked
The Velcro keel securing strap — designed to hold the 125kg lead bulb keel in its lowered position — was not in place. When the boat capsized, the unsecured keel retracted fully into its housing. Without it extended, the boat had no self-righting capability. It inverted completely, turtling in the water. The disabled crew member was trapped under the hull. The assistant instructor was able to swim clear. The safety boat reached the scene quickly but could not right the inverted boat, or reach the trapped crew member, in time.
A Rescue Nobody Had Trained For
MAIB's investigation found two separate gaps behind the fatality: the keel strap check — a manufacturer-specified pre-sail step — had not been performed, likely because it had been missed before without consequence. And the disabled sailing programme's risk assessment had not extended to the specific scenario of a full inversion with a disabled occupant trapped underneath, leaving the safety boat crew without the training or protocol to respond to exactly the situation they faced.
Recommended Actions
- All operators of RS Venture Connect and similar retractable keel craft: prior to use, ensure the manufacturer's instructions regarding the securing of the keel or weighted centreboard have been followed. Procedures and drills for recovering a capsized boat must include the scenario where the keel or centreboard has retracted from its lowered position (Rec SB_2019/S2).

The keel strap check was a documented pre-sail requirement in the rigging guide. It had likely been missed before without anything going wrong, which is exactly how a critical check quietly stops being treated as critical.
Complacency
A retractable keel that will retract during capsize if unsecured is a known design characteristic, documented by the manufacturer. Treating that check as optional, even once, removed the boat's entire self-righting capability the one time it mattered.
