Workboats & CTVs — Offshore Wind Crew

🕑 7 min read 1,400 words Entry • Sector

The offshore wind sector is one of the fastest-growing areas of the global energy industry — and it has created sustained, structural demand for maritime crew that shows no sign of slowing. The UK, with the largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world, is at the centre of this growth. For seafarers entering or transitioning into this sector, the timing has rarely been better.

The Vessels

Three main vessel types operate in offshore wind:

  • CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel) — fast monohull or catamaran vessels that transfer maintenance technicians between port and turbines. Typically 20–30m. Day operations in most cases.
  • SOV (Service Operation Vessel) — larger vessels (60–90m+) that serve as offshore accommodation and service platforms. Crew live aboard during the campaign, typically 2–3 week rotations.
  • CSOV (Construction and Service Operation Vessel) — hybrid vessels combining construction and service capability.
  • Jack-up installation vessels — heavy lift vessels used for turbine installation. Specialist crew, high pay.

Core Certifications

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST)

The Global Wind Organisation (GWO) BST is mandatory for anyone working on offshore wind turbines. It comprises five modules:

  • Manual Handling
  • Working at Heights
  • First Aid
  • Fire Awareness
  • Sea Survival

GWO BST takes approximately 5 days and costs £600–£900 at an approved centre. Valid for 2 years, then GWO Refresher Training (BSTR) required.

MCA Boatmaster Licence

CTV Masters on UK-traded vessels require the MCA Boatmaster Licence, which comes in three tiers:

  • Tier 3 — inland and sheltered waters, vessels up to 24m
  • Tier 2 — tidal waters and short coastal voyages, vessels up to 24m
  • Tier 1 — worldwide operation including offshore, vessels up to 24m

Tier 1 Boatmaster is the standard qualification for CTV Masters working in UK offshore wind fields. Requirements include sea service, first aid, and written and oral assessment.

STCW OOW 500GT (for SOV roles)

SOV Master positions typically require a full STCW OOW or higher qualification, DP certification (usually DP Unlimited), and GWO training. These are higher-value roles commanding £70,000–£95,000/year.

Day Operations vs Rotation

One of the most significant lifestyle advantages of CTV work is the day-operation model. Many CTV Masters drive to their home port, depart for the windfarm, transfer technicians, and return to port — home every evening. This is a fundamentally different lifestyle from deep-sea trading or residential offshore rotation, and it is highly valued by seafarers with families.

SOV roles are residential (crew live aboard for 2–4 weeks), but the rotation is predictable and the pay reflects the additional commitment.

Pay Overview

  • CTV Deckhand / Transfer Technician: £28,000–£38,000/year
  • CTV Mate: £35,000–£50,000/year
  • CTV Master: £45,000–£65,000/year
  • SOV Master: £70,000–£95,000/year
  • SOV Chief Engineer: £65,000–£85,000/year

Key Employers

Major CTV and SOV operators in the UK offshore wind sector include:

  • Windcat Workboats
  • Seacat Services
  • Northern Offshore Services (NOS)
  • Bernhard Schulte Offshore
  • Heerema Marine Contractors
  • DEME Offshore

The Growth Opportunity

The UK has committed to 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Each gigawatt of offshore wind requires a sustained maintenance programme for 20–25 years. The demand for GWO-trained, Boatmaster-certified CTV crew and DP-capable SOV officers will continue growing throughout this decade. For seafarers making a sector choice now, this is one of the most structurally positive environments available.
