Workboat Code vs the Yacht Code — Which Applies to Your Vessel?

Both the Workboat Code and the Red Ensign Group (REG) Yacht Code exist to certify small commercial vessels below the size where full international conventions apply — and both use a similar Category/Area of operation structure. That structural similarity is exactly why they get mixed up.

What Separates Them

The distinction is the vessel's purpose and type, not its size alone. The Yacht Code is written for commercially operated yachts — vessels designed and used for pleasure/charter purposes, even when coded for commercial use (chartering, sail training). The Workboat Code covers workboats, pilot boats and other small commercial vessels used for work — cargo, personnel transfer, servicing, pilotage — rather than recreational or charter purposes.

Why the Framework Feels the Same

Both codes were developed to fill the same regulatory gap — small commercial vessels that don't fit neatly under full SOLAS-scale conventions — and both use a Category-of-operation approach to scale construction, stability and equipment standards to realistic operating conditions. If you've studied one framework's logic, the other will feel structurally familiar, but the specific standards, survey regime and typical vessel types differ.

How to Tell Which One Applies

• Ask what the vessel is actually used for — work/cargo/personnel transfer points to Workboat Code; charter/pleasure/sail training points to Yacht Code
• Check the vessel's actual certificate — it will name the code it's certified under; don't assume from vessel type alone
• If you're moving between sectors (e.g. workboat/CTV work into yacht crewing or vice versa), don't assume your Workboat Code knowledge transfers directly to Yacht Code specifics, or the reverse — treat it as a related but separate framework to learn
