Workboat Code Safety Equipment — Life-Saving & Fire-Fighting Requirements

Safety equipment requirements under the Workboat Code aren't a single universal checklist — they scale to the vessel's certified Category and Area of operation, and to how many people it carries. This guide explains the logic, which is what orals examiners are actually testing.

Life-Saving Appliances (LSA)

Every vessel needs enough life-saving equipment for everyone aboard — lifejackets or buoyancy aids appropriate to the operation, life rafts or equivalent for vessels operating further from a safe haven, and personal locator/distress equipment scaled to the Category. A vessel certified for sheltered, close-to-shore operation is assessed against a different equipment fit than one certified for more exposed conditions further from immediate rescue — because the realistic time-to-rescue is different.

Fire-Fighting Equipment

Fixed and portable fire-fighting provision is matched to the vessel's machinery spaces, fuel type, and general layout — engine space fire risks in particular are a recurring oral exam theme, because a small vessel underway offshore has limited firefighting resource and no ability to simply "abandon and reboard" the way a larger vessel's crew might manage a contained fire.

Distress & Communication Equipment

Radio and distress-alerting equipment requirements are tied to the vessel's Area of operation — a vessel certified only for waters within range of shore-based VHF cover has different carriage requirements than one certified to operate further offshore, where GMDSS-equivalent coverage becomes relevant.

Why Examiners Push on "Why," Not Just "What"

Reciting an equipment list from memory is the weakest possible answer. The stronger answer explains why a given item is required for a given Category — because it demonstrates you understand the safety equipment fit as a coherent response to the vessel's actual operating risk, not an arbitrary compliance checklist.
