Workboat Code FAQs — Quick Answers to Common Questions
Short, direct answers to the questions that come up most often about the Workboat Code — each one links through to a fuller guide if you want the detail.
What is the Workboat Code?
A UK framework of construction, stability, equipment and manning standards for workboats, pilot boats and similar small commercial vessels, scaled to a certified Category and Area of operation. See What Is the Workboat Code? for the full explanation.
What does "Category of operation" mean?
It defines the sea/weather conditions and distance-from-safe-haven standard the vessel's construction and equipment have been assessed against — not a suggestion, a limit the certificate is built around.
Does the Workboat Code apply to fishing vessels?
No — fishing vessels are covered by their own separate regulatory framework, distinct from the Workboat Code, even though some operational themes (small crew, limited freeboard, MOB risk) overlap in practice.
Is the Workboat Code the same as the Boatmaster Licence?
No — the Code certifies the vessel, the Licence certifies the person commanding it. See Workboat Code vs Boatmaster Licence.
How is it different from the Yacht Code?
Both use a similar Category/Area structure, but the Yacht Code applies to commercially operated yachts and the Workboat Code applies to working vessels — cargo, personnel transfer, pilotage. See Workboat Code vs the Yacht Code.
Does a Workboat Code certificate expire?
Yes — it's tied to periodic and renewal survey, not issued once and forgotten. See Certification & Survey Requirements.
Does the Workboat Code apply to CTVs in offshore wind?
Yes — CTVs are certified under the Workboat Code like any other workboat, with GWO training layered on top as a sector-specific addition. See Workboat Code for CTVs.
