A Modern Vessel Doesn't Remove Risk. It Moves It.

The Warning Behind the Investment Boom

Asia's shipowners and operators are investing heavily in LNG and alternative-fuel vessels. The Swedish Club's warning is straightforward: that investment has to be matched by an equivalent investment in crew competence, or the safety benefits these newer, more efficient vessels are supposed to deliver simply won't materialise. The concern for marine insurers isn't the complexity of the ships being ordered on its own — it's whether there are enough seafarers with the right experience and confidence to actually operate them safely.

The Line That Cuts to the Point

Julia Ju, Regional Executive Director of Team Hong Kong at The Swedish Club, put it plainly: a modern vessel does not remove risk if the crew aren't properly prepared to operate it — the risk simply moves into how the ship is managed, maintained, and operated. New technology doesn't eliminate hazard; it relocates it, often into places that are less visible until something goes wrong. The Club's stated need is for more systematic training, stronger safety management, and better situational awareness on board — not just more advanced vessels.

What This Means for Every Rank Moving to Newer Tonnage

  • Familiarity with conventional propulsion and fuel systems doesn't automatically transfer to LNG or alternative-fuel vessels — treat the training gap as real, not procedural
  • If you're joining a newer vessel type, be honest with yourself and your Master about where your training genuinely covers the system in front of you and where it doesn't
  • Masters and superintendents should treat crew competence verification on new vessel types as an active safety management task, not an assumption that certification alone covers it
