Seafish Secures £1.4m+ for Seafood Industry Training — Onshore Processors Now Eligible Too

Seafish has secured more than £1.4 million to expand training across the UK seafood industry — funding that, for the first time, extends to onshore processors and seafood businesses as well as fishers themselves.

Where the Money's Coming From

£419,950 arrives via Marine Fund Scotland, funding training in Scotland through to 31 March 2027. A further £998,858 comes through the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS), funding training in England through to 31 March 2028. Funding is also in place for Wales.

What It's Expected to Deliver

The combined investment is expected to support around 6,000 training days a year, reaching fishers, processors, wholesalers, fish markets, aquaculture businesses, retailers, and fish and chip shops — a genuinely wide net across the seafood supply chain, not just vessel crew.

Why the Onshore Eligibility Change Matters

Historically, industry training funding has skewed toward vessel-based roles. Opening eligibility to onshore processors and seafood businesses acknowledges that competency and safety gaps exist across the whole supply chain, not just at sea — and it widens the pool of people who can access funded training meaningfully.
