Sailors' Society's Sea Mate: Training a Wellbeing Officer for Every Ship
Sailors' Society's Sea Mate programme creates and trains a new role on board: the Wellbeing Officer, a crew member equipped through the charity's global training team to recognise distress, provide peer support, and connect a struggling colleague directly to Sailors' Society's crisis response team when it matters most.
A Bigger Partnership, Launched at the Right Moment
Launched during Day of the Seafarer week 2026, a new partnership between Sailors' Society and marine insurer NorthStandard delivers Sea Mate as part of NorthStandard's "My Mind Matters" initiative. Sailors' Society CEO Sara Baade put the scale in plain terms: the partnership "could see thousands of new Wellbeing Officers on board ships across the world, trained to give frontline help and support to fellow crewmates."
Why a Peer Role, Not Just a Helpline
Confidential helplines matter, but they require someone to make an outbound call, often from a position of already-acute distress. A trained Wellbeing Officer changes that dynamic — they're already on board, already a colleague, and trained specifically to notice the early signs before a situation becomes a crisis. That's the gap Sea Mate is built to close, and it complements rather than replaces the wider welfare-charity network.
What This Means for Crew
If your fleet operator is a NorthStandard member, or your company is exploring Sea Mate independently, expect to see this role formalised on more vessels over the coming year. It's worth knowing who holds it on your own ship — not just as a name on a poster, but as someone specifically trained and backed by a real crisis-response line.
