RYA Yachtmaster Passage Planning: Tides, Secondary Ports and the Parts That Actually Trip Candidates Up

It isn't.

It's Not Plotting a Line

Passage planning to Yachtmaster standard means fully understanding every factor that affects the route — tidal streams, drying harbours, secondary ports, and the full range of conditions that could change your plan, not just picking a course and a departure time. An RYA examiner's own guidance for the Power exam frames tidal planning as something you need to be genuinely fluent in, not something you look up once: candidates must be confident calculating tidal heights and times, "especially when approaching unfamiliar harbours with potential access restrictions" (Flying Fish, an RYA examiner's guide).

Tidal Streams: Read the Diamonds, Not Just the Atlas

You need to be able to pull tidal stream information from tidal diamonds on the chart as well as the tidal stream atlas, and actually use it to plan for a favourable stream rather than just note that one exists. Making best use of tide is described as "quite an art" for a sailing yacht where boat speed is constantly changing — examiners expect you to have done this planning for real, understanding, for example, why you'd want to arrive at a strong tidal gate like the Alderney Race with the stream in your favour rather than fighting it (source: examiner guidance summarised via Flying Fish).

Secondary Ports: Where Candidates Lose the Most Time

The RYA uses the Admiralty method for calculating tidal heights, which is accurate anywhere in the world but genuinely slow and fiddly — particularly for secondary ports, where you're applying time and height differences on top of a standard port curve rather than reading straight off a graph. A common, avoidable mistake is bringing chart datum into the calculation when the method doesn't call for it, which produces a plausible-looking but wrong answer. Building a standard template for the calculation, rather than starting from scratch every time, is the difference between doing this in two minutes under pressure and getting lost in the working.

The Mistake Pattern Examiners Actually See

Candidates are frequently broadly competent offshore — clean navigation in open water — but lose marks specifically in close coastal work, because they haven't built crisp pilotage routines to match. The recurring weak spots: tidal height calculations done too slowly to be usable on deck, uncertain COLREGs recall under pressure, poor use of transits when actually piloting into a harbour, vague man-overboard recovery planning, and sloppy pre-departure engine checks. None of these are exotic gaps — they're the ordinary parts of the syllabus that erode fastest without deliberate practice.

Usable, Not Just Accurate

The standard to aim for is navigation that's accurate and usable on deck in real time — you're navigating an actual yacht in front of an examiner, not sitting a theory paper. A tidal height calculation that's correct but takes twelve minutes at the chart table, while the boat closes on a drying harbour, is a problem even if the number itself is right.
