Four Tonnes From Capsize: How Three “Routine” Modifications Sank the Nancy Glen

A Turn to Starboard, and a Net That Wouldn't Let Go
On 18 January 2018, the prawn trawler Nancy Glen was hauling in Lower Loch Fyne, Scotland, when the skipper began a turn to starboard. The starboard net fouled on the seabed, creating a sudden and significant heeling moment. Nancy Glen's residual stability was not enough to resist it. The vessel capsized and foundered rapidly. The skipper (46) and a deckhand (38) were lost; one crew member survived.
What Three “Minor” Changes Actually Did
MAIB's investigation found the immediate cause — a fouled net during a turn — was a known operational hazard on prawn trawlers, the kind of thing a vessel with adequate stability margin is built to survive. Nancy Glen wasn't that vessel anymore. Between 2002 and 2017, three modifications had been made: a Kort nozzle fitted in 2012, the prawn storage tanks relocated from below deck to the upper deck in 2017, and — just weeks before the accident, over Christmas 2017 — a 700kg crane replaced with a 1,500kg crane. None of the three had a stability assessment. Individually, each looked like routine maintenance and upgrade. Together, they cut the vessel's capsize threshold from 6 tonnes of vertical offset load to 4 tonnes — a 33% reduction.
The Regulatory Gap Underneath It
No UK regulation required small fishing vessels under 12m registered length to undergo a stability check, whether on build or after modification. Nobody was obliged to calculate what a crane twice the weight of its predecessor, fitted at an elevated point, would do to the vessel's margin. The heavier crane was, in mass terms, a 114% increase at height — not a like-for-like swap, whatever it looked like on the invoice.
Recommended Actions
- MCA: Introduce a requirement for all small fishing vessels to undergo a stability check at five-yearly intervals, and following any modification that alters the vessel's weight distribution (Rec 2019/109).
Human Element Analysis
Normalisation
Each modification to Nancy Glen was treated as a routine operational decision, made without any regulatory trigger to reassess stability. The owners had no obligation to seek an assessment, so the erosion of the safety margin was never visible — there was no number anyone was tracking that would have shown the danger building.
Complacency
A heavier crane installed weeks before the accident was accepted as a straightforward upgrade. Nobody weighed it against the vessel's stability baseline, because nobody had ever been required to establish what that baseline was after the earlier changes.
Workload
Fouled gear is a routine hazard prawn trawler crews manage constantly. On a vessel with its original stability margin, a fouled net during a turn is manageable. On a vessel that had quietly lost a third of its margin, the same routine event was fatal.

Lessons for Fishing Vessel Owners and Skippers
- Any modification that changes a vessel's weight or where that weight sits — a heavier engine, a relocated tank, a bigger crane — should trigger a stability reassessment, whether or not it's legally required.
- A heavier replacement part is not a like-for-like swap. Mass increase at an elevated point on a small vessel has an outsized effect on stability.
- Under-12m registered length is not a safe size threshold in practice — it's a regulatory one. Crew risk doesn't change at that line.
- Fouled gear during a turn is a known, recurring hazard on prawn trawlers — stability margin is what determines whether it's a routine recovery or a capsize.
