Uncrewed Surface Vessels Are Growing Fast — the New MASS Code, and How to Actually Get Into This in the UK
The Market Moved Faster Than the Job Titles Have Caught Up
A year ago, maritime lawyers advising on uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) were mostly dealing with vessels between 2 and 24 metres. In the space of twelve months — driven by global conflicts and rapid technological progress — that range has stretched to 14–40 metres, a genuinely different class of vessel with genuinely different crewing, insurance and regulatory questions attached. If you've assumed autonomous shipping is still a small-craft niche, that assumption is already out of date.
The New MASS Code, in Plain Terms
IMO's Maritime Safety Committee adopted the first global Code of Safety for Maritime Autonomous Ships (the MASS Code) on 22 May 2026 at MSC 111 — a goal-based framework meant to hold autonomous vessels to equivalent safety and environmental standards as conventional ships. It applies to large internationally-trading cargo ships and took effect, as a non-mandatory instrument, on 1 July 2026. The roadmap from here: an Experience-Building Phase framework due at MSC 112 in December 2026, feeding into a genuinely mandatory version of the Code targeted for adoption by 1 July 2030, entering force via SOLAS amendments on 1 January 2032. In short: the rules exist now, they're voluntary for six years, and they become binding on a known timeline — not an indefinite "someday."
How to Actually Get Into This in the UK
This is a real, current career pathway, not a speculative future one, and it doesn't require starting from scratch if you already have a maritime background:
- HydroSurv runs USV Operator Courses from their UK facility, combining classroom tuition, hands-on system familiarisation and live waterborne training exercises, with certification aimed at supporting remote operators through safety and regulatory compliance.
- SeaBotMaritime offers training pathways specifically designed to bridge existing maritime knowledge into the competencies needed to manage and operate uncrewed vessels — built for people transferring in from conventional roles, not starting cold.
- BMT provides a broader suite of training programmes and digital tools supporting autonomous vessel development and operation, useful if your interest is more on the systems/engineering side than direct operation.
- The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has its own Remote Operator training and certification pilot framework under development, aimed at standardising Remote Operator competence across UK industry and academia — worth watching directly if you want to be ahead of whatever becomes the recognised UK qualification.
None of this replaces a conventional deck or engineering background — if anything, existing STCW competence is exactly what these providers are building on top of, not replacing.
