Dynamic Positioning (DP)

DP is the gateway to a wide range of offshore roles — platform supply vessels, anchor handlers, offshore wind support vessels, cable layers, and construction support vessels all rely on DP-certified officers. It's arguably the broadest of the three in terms of the range of vessel types and sectors it opens up.

Investment Required

DP training follows a structured pathway — induction course, a period of supervised DP sea time, simulator course, and further sea time before a DP certificate is issued. The total time investment is significant but spread across normal sea service rather than requiring large blocks of time away from work, which makes it relatively accessible to fit around an existing career.

LNG / Gas Tanker

LNG specialisation is narrower in terms of vessel types (gas carriers specifically) but, as covered in our dedicated guide, sits in one of the most acute supply-demand gaps in the industry currently — driven by the post-2022 expansion of global LNG trade. Pay premiums in this sector are often the most pronounced of the three.

The STCW basic and advanced training for liquefied gas tankers is relatively quick to complete — the bigger barrier is the chicken-and-egg problem of getting first LNG sea time, which some companies address through structured pathways for junior officers.
