1. What / Why / How
A crane amplifies vessel motion at the hook: the boom and load are typically well outboard and above deck level, so a small vessel movement or roll can translate into a much larger swing or positioning error at the load itself. “Within DP tolerance” doesn't automatically mean “acceptable for this specific lift.”
2. Recognition / Risk / But
The risk is genuinely two-way — distinct from most other DP-supported tasks. Vessel movement risks load swing, structure contact or a dropped-object hazard to anything below. But the load itself also affects the vessel: a heavy load slewed outboard shifts the vessel's list/trim, which can feed back into thruster efficiency and available capability. But: before judging current drift acceptable, check the lift plan's own weather/motion limits directly with the lift supervisor — frequently tighter than general DP capability — and the vessel's current actual list/trim given the load's position.

If the lift supervisor confirms the current motion is right at the edge of the lift plan's envelope, even though it's comfortable against general DP tolerance, treat the lift plan's limit as the operative threshold: increase monitoring, communicate the margin clearly, and be ready to pause — landing the load in a safe position, not leaving it suspended.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
Two compounding factors — worsening environment and the vessel's own list changing as the load moves — call for a fresh, combined reassessment, not two separate tickets. Resuming after a pause needs genuine verification against the lift plan's own criteria — sustained improvement, confirmed vessel stability back to baseline — not a glance at the general DP display. Trap: treating one good reading as equivalent to real recovery.
