DP Capability — Reading the Margin

1. What / Why / How
A capability plot shows the environmental conditions — wind, combined with current and wave assumptions — a vessel can hold position against at a given heading, usually for both intact and post-failure (worst case failure) conditions. It isn't one fixed number; capability genuinely varies with heading, loading and which failure condition is being plotted.
2. Recognition / Risk / But
Comfortable intact capability can sit alongside a post-failure capability much closer to current conditions — that gap is exactly what a DPO needs to be tracking, not just the intact figure describing the base case. But: check whether the plot reflects today's actual configuration — draft, loading, which thrusters/generators are available, the assumed environmental combination. A plot built on different assumptions can be meaningfully wrong for the current situation.
3. Now / What next / Decision / Why
With assumptions confirmed and wind forecast to increase, track the trend against both intact and post-failure capability throughout the operation, identifying in advance the point at which the operation would need to change — rather than reacting only once a limit is already being approached.
4. Consequence / Reassess / Escalate
A partial thruster fault sits between the plotted intact and worst-case-failure conditions — it needs a genuine current-state reassessment, not just a choice between the two plotted extremes.
5. Recover / Verify / Human factor
A safe outcome with margin actively tracked throughout looks identical on the surface to one down to luck. Trap: concluding tracking wasn't necessary just because nothing went wrong.
Capability is a dynamic margin, shaped by heading, loading, configuration and environment together. A DPO's job is actively tracking where the real, current margin sits against both intact and post-failure conditions throughout an operation.
