Why Dewpoint Is the Number Every OOW Should Actually Be Watching

Temperature alone doesn't tell you when fog is coming. Cloud and fog form when air cools to its dewpoint — the temperature at which water vapour in the air condenses onto available nuclei — and the practical warning sign isn't an absolute number, it's the spread between air temperature and dewpoint.

The Spread Is the Signal

A small, narrowing gap between sea/air temperature and dewpoint is the practical indicator that fog risk is rising, especially over relatively cold sea surfaces where warmer, moist air cools quickly as it passes over. Watching the spread narrow gives genuine lead time that watching temperature alone doesn't.

The Same Physics, a Different Problem: Cargo Sweat

The identical mechanism drives condensation risk in cargo holds. "Ship's sweat" occurs when warm, moist air inside a hold contacts a cold steel surface (typically the hull or deckhead) below its dewpoint; "cargo sweat" occurs when the cargo itself is colder than the surrounding air's dewpoint, causing condensation directly on the cargo. Both are dewpoint problems, not simple temperature problems — which is exactly why this ties back to loading and ventilation decisions, not just weather routing.

The Orals Gap Worth Closing

A common gap in exam answers is reaching for temperature alone when asked about fog risk or condensation risk, rather than naming dewpoint spread as the actual predictive factor. Practise framing both fog forecasting and cargo condensation answers around the dewpoint spread specifically — it's a small habit that reads as genuinely understanding the mechanism rather than reciting a fact.
