Seafarer Immigration and Visas
Visa problems ground more seafarers than medical issues. A missing transit visa discovered at the airport, a documentation error on a seafarer identity document, or an ETIAS registration forgotten until the day of travel can delay a ship's departure, cost the operator money, and seriously damage your professional reputation. This guide covers the key visas and immigration documents every working seafarer should know about.
Your Seafarer Identity Document (SID)
Most maritime nations issue a Seafarer Identity Document alongside the passport. In the UK this is the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC). For other nationals it may be a Seaman's Book, Seafarer's Book, or similar. The SID is not a travel document in itself but is required alongside your passport for port and vessel access. Always carry both.
C1/D — US Transit/Crewmember Visa
The C1/D visa is required for non-US citizens joining or leaving vessels in US ports. It covers both crew transit and vessel sign-on/off. It is one of the most commonly needed and most frequently overlooked visas in international seafaring.
- Who needs it: Any non-US citizen working on a vessel calling at US ports, or transiting the US to join a vessel elsewhere
- Who is exempt: Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries (including UK nationals) for transit only — but NOT for crew sign-on/off, which requires the C1/D regardless of nationality
- Processing time: 2–8 weeks typically; allow longer in busy periods
- Validity: Usually 5 or 10 years, multiple entry
- Cost: $185 application fee
- Apply at: usembassy.gov — select the US Embassy/Consulate for your home country
If your vessel trades to US ports and you don't have this visa, get it now — not when the rotation comes up.
ETIAS — EU Travel Information and Authorisation System
ETIAS applies to non-EU/EEA nationals who are currently visa-exempt for the Schengen Area — including UK citizens post-Brexit. It is an advance travel authorisation (not a visa) required before travel to Schengen countries. Expected to launch in 2025/2026.
- Online application, valid for 3 years or until passport expiry
- Cost: €7
- Must be linked to your specific passport
- Required for transit through Schengen airports as well as entry
Once live, UK seafarers joining vessels in EU ports will need ETIAS. Monitor the official EU ETIAS site for the launch date.
Schengen Visa (Non-Exempt Nationals)
Nationals of countries not on the Schengen visa-exempt list need a Schengen visa to enter EU ports for crew change. Apply through the embassy of the first Schengen country you will enter, or the country of your primary destination. Allow 4–6 weeks. Your manning agent should assist with this — if they are not, flag it early.
Australian Maritime Crew Visa (MCV)
Required for all non-Australian citizens joining vessels in Australian ports. The MCV is employer-sponsored and the operator or manning agent applies on your behalf. As a seafarer, ensure your employer has submitted the MCV application well in advance — processing can take 2–4 weeks. Check status at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
UK Seafarer Visa
Non-UK/EEA nationals signing on UK-flagged vessels or joining in UK ports may require a UK Seafarer Visa. Replaces the Transit Visa for crew purposes post-Brexit. Check requirements at gov.uk.
China Port Entry
China does not participate in many reciprocal visa-waiver agreements. Seafarers signing on in Chinese ports may require a Chinese Crew Visa — apply through the Chinese Embassy in your home country, well in advance. Some nationalities require a Letter of Invitation from the vessel's agent.
