Offshore Oil & Gas Crew Career Guide

🕑 7 min read 1,500 words Entry • Sector

Offshore oil and gas remains one of the highest-paying environments in the maritime world. It is also one of the most demanding in terms of certification requirements, physical fitness standards, and the speed at which you need to be operational. For seafarers willing to invest in the entry qualifications, the rewards — in pay, rotation patterns, and career development — are substantial.

Vessel Types

The offshore sector uses a wide range of specialist vessels:

  • Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) — transport cargo, fuel, and equipment to installations
  • Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) — anchor handling, towing, and supply
  • Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) — general umbrella for PSV and AHTS
  • Dive Support Vessels (DSV) — saturation diving operations, pipeline inspection
  • Construction Support Vessels (CSV) — pipe-lay, heavy lift, subsea construction
  • Well Intervention and Stimulation Vessels (WISV) — specialist well work
  • FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) — processing and storage units

Core Entry Certifications

Beyond standard STCW BST, working offshore requires additional safety certifications:

BOSIET — Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training

The fundamental offshore safety qualification. Covers offshore emergency procedures, helicopter safety (including HUET — Helicopter Underwater Escape Training), survival at sea, and offshore working environment hazards. Takes 2–3 days. Cost: approximately £900–£1,400. Revalidation (FOET — Further Offshore Emergency Training) required every 4 years. Approved UK training centres include Survivex, OPITO-approved providers, and others.

HUET — Helicopter Underwater Escape Training

Usually included within BOSIET. Involves practical training in a helicopter fuselage dunker — exiting an inverted underwater cabin. The physical reality of HUET is a significant factor for some candidates. If you have concerns about enclosed space or water-related anxiety, address this before booking.

MIST — Minimum Industry Safety Training

Required for all personnel working on UK offshore installations. Covers offshore emergency procedures, environmental standards, and regulatory requirements. One day. OPITO-approved.

Offshore Medical — PSA/IADC Rig Medical

In addition to the standard ENG1, offshore workers on installations (and typically OSV crew working with installations) require an Offshore Medical Certificate. In the UK, this is an OGUK (formerly UKOOA) medical conducted by an approved physician. More stringent than ENG1 — cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and psychological fitness are assessed more thoroughly. Valid for 2 years. Cost: £200–£350.

DP Certification

Dynamic Positioning (DP) operators are among the most in-demand specialists in the offshore sector. DP-equipped OSVs, DSVs, and CSVs require qualified DP operators for watchkeeping. The Nautical Institute and IMCA jointly administer the DP certification framework. See the full DP certification guide for details on the DPJD → DPU pathway.

Rotation Patterns

Offshore rotation differs from deep-sea trading. Common patterns:

  • 2:2 (2 weeks on, 2 weeks off) — standard for UKCS OSV crew
  • 28:28 (4 weeks on, 4 weeks off) — common for international offshore and deep-water operations
  • 3:3 (3 weeks on, 3 weeks off) — used by some operators, particularly in West Africa

These predictable rotation patterns are one of the offshore sector's main lifestyle advantages over deep-sea trading — you know exactly when you are going home.

The Route to OIM

The Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is the most senior offshore role — equivalent in authority to a ship's master. The pathway is typically:

  1. OOW qualification + BOSIET, DP certification
  2. Experience on OSV in the DP watchkeeping role
  3. Chief Officer on OSV or equivalent senior position
  4. Command experience as Master of OSV
  5. OPITO OIM Controlling Emergencies training
  6. OIM on a floating installation (FPSO, semi-submersible)

OIM salaries for UKCS operations range from £120,000–£200,000+ annually depending on installation size and operator.

Key Operators

Major UK offshore OSV operators include Bourbon Offshore, Tidewater, DOF Subsea, Boskalis, DEME, and Swire Pacific Offshore. Many operate through manning agencies for officer-level crew — register your profile on Crew Connect to be visible to offshore recruiters actively sourcing for your rank and certification.

Offshore certification expiry is mission-critical. BOSIET, MIST, and your offshore medical all have hard expiry dates — an expired certificate means you cannot travel offshore. Your Crew Connect certification tracker flags renewals in advance so you're never grounded.
