MCA Approved Maritime Training Centres UK: A Regional Guide

🕑 4 min read 850 words Quals • Entry • Practical

Not all maritime training is equal — and not all institutions are approved to deliver it. The MCA maintains a register of approved training centres for STCW and Certificate of Competency courses. Only courses completed at approved centres count towards MCA qualification applications. This guide covers the major centres by region, what each specialises in, and how to choose where to train.

How MCA Approval Works

The MCA approves training centres under the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 2015. Approval is specific to each course type — a centre approved to deliver Basic Safety Training is not automatically approved to deliver GMDSS or ECDIS. Before booking, confirm the specific course you need is on the centre's approval list. The full register is searchable on the MCA website at gov.uk/MCA.

Major Centres by Region

Scotland

City of Glasgow College is Scotland's primary maritime training institution, offering full officer cadet programmes, STCW courses, CoC oral preparation, and simulator-based training including bridge and engine room simulators. The college has strong links with CalMac and the Scottish maritime industry. University of the Highlands and Islands and associated colleges serve the Scottish islands and Highland maritime community, with particular relevance to CalMac and coastal vessel operations.

Northeast England

South Tyneside College (now part of the South Tyneside and Sunderland college group) has a long history of maritime training in the Northeast, offering STCW, oral preparation, and GMDSS courses. Grimsby Institute / Minerva Maritime Training serves the Humber region, relevant to the growing offshore wind sector operating from Grimsby and the East Riding coast.

Northwest England

Fleetwood Nautical Campus (Blackpool and Fylde College) is one of the UK's established maritime training centres, offering a full range of officer cadet programmes, STCW courses, and simulator training. Located in Fleetwood on the Lancashire coast with strong links to the Northwest maritime industry.

London and Southeast

London South Bank University (LSBU) offers maritime programmes including STCW, CoC oral preparation, and officer training. Well located for seafarers based in the southeast and for those seeking courses between contracts. Greenwich Maritime Institute (University of Greenwich) offers maritime education at degree and postgraduate level with industry connections through the Greenwich campus.

South Coast — The National Centre

Warsash Maritime School (Solent University, Southampton) is widely regarded as the UK's flagship MCA-approved maritime training centre. The full range of STCW, CoC, ECDIS, GMDSS, HELM, simulator, and oral preparation courses are available. The simulator facilities are among the most advanced in the UK. Warsash has trained generations of British merchant navy officers and maintains close relationships with major shipping companies. If you are doing a significant training programme and have the flexibility to travel, Warsash is worth considering as your primary centre.

Southwest

City College Plymouth and Plymouth University's COAST (Coastal, Ocean and Aquatic Science and Technology) Institute serve the Southwest maritime sector. UKSA (UK Sailing Academy, Cowes, Isle of Wight) is the training partner for the Marine Society apprenticeship programmes and delivers a range of STCW and professional maritime courses in a practical sailing environment.

Wales and Northern Ireland

Coleg Ceredigion (Aberystwyth) and associated Welsh colleges serve the Welsh coastal maritime community. South Eastern Regional College (SERC) in Northern Ireland has maritime training provision relevant to the Belfast Lough and Belfast–Liverpool and Belfast–Cairnryan ferry routes.

Private Training Providers

Alongside the college network, several MCA-approved private providers operate nationally or regionally. These include specialist STCW refresher providers, ECDIS type-specific training centres (often operated by the ECDIS equipment manufacturers themselves — Wärtsilä, Furuno, JRC — which is the approved route for type-specific training), and RYA-affiliated centres for the coastal and yacht sector.

How to Choose

  • Confirm MCA approval for your specific course before booking — do not assume
  • Consider location relative to your home port — a course that requires two nights away adds cost and disruption
  • Check dates and availability early — oral preparation courses and GMDSS courses at major centres fill quickly, particularly August–October
  • Ask your employer — most companies have preferred providers and some have negotiated rates
Always verify: MCA approval lists are updated regularly. Before booking any course, confirm on the MCA website that the specific centre and specific course are currently approved. Approval can be revoked, and a course completed at a non-approved centre cannot be used for MCA certificate applications.
