DP Certification — DPJD to DPU
Dynamic Positioning certification is one of the most commercially valuable qualifications in offshore maritime. DP-qualified officers are in consistent demand across offshore support, subsea construction, diving support, cable-lay, and an increasing number of other vessel types. The path to DP Unlimited (DPU) is structured but takes time — this guide explains every stage.
What Is Dynamic Positioning?
Dynamic Positioning (DP) is an automated computer-controlled system that uses thrusters to maintain a vessel's position and heading without anchors, using GPS, acoustics, wind sensors, and other reference systems. DP-equipped vessels are essential for deepwater offshore operations where traditional anchoring is not possible.
The Certification Framework
DP certification is administered jointly by the Nautical Institute (NI) and IMCA, with the NI framework being most widely recognised internationally. The NI pathway runs:
Step 1: DPJD — DP Junior Dynamic Positioning Operator
- Complete an approved DP induction course (3–5 days, typically £1,500–£2,500)
- No sea time required to obtain DPJD
- Register your DP logbook with the Nautical Institute
Step 2: Sea Time (DP Experience)
This is the longest stage. Between DPJD and DPO, you must accumulate:
- Minimum 150 days on DP watch across at least 2 DP vessels
- DP time must be logged in your NI-approved DP logbook, signed by the Master
- Experience on at least one DP Class 2 or Class 3 vessel is strongly recommended
- At least one DP incident/emergency must be recorded during sea service (documented in the logbook)
Step 3: DPO — DP Operator
- Complete an approved DP simulator course (5 days approximately)
- Submit your sea time evidence to the Nautical Institute
- Cost of course: approximately £1,800–£2,800
- DPO is the working certification — most offshore vessels require DPO for watchkeeping
Step 4: Further Sea Time for DPU
Between DPO and DPU:
- Additional 150 days as a qualified DPO on DP watch
- Experience on DP Class 2 and/or 3 vessels
- Combined total of 300+ days DP sea time recommended before applying
Step 5: DPU — DP Unlimited
- Complete an advanced DP simulator course
- Submit full sea time documentation to NI
- DPU qualifies you to operate DP on any class of vessel in any environment
- Revalidation required every 5 years
The DP Logbook
Your DP logbook is the critical record throughout this process. Every DP watch, every incident, and every vessel must be recorded accurately and signed off by the Master. Inaccurate, incomplete, or fraudulent logbook entries are taken extremely seriously by the NI — certification fraud in the DP sector has been identified as a significant safety issue, and certificates have been revoked.
Which Vessels Count?
Not every DP-equipped vessel qualifies for NI logbook hours. The vessel must be:
- Equipped with an approved DP system (Class 1, 2, or 3)
- On the NI approved vessels list (check at nautinst.org)
- Operated in an environment where DP capability is genuinely exercised
Ferries and some other vessels have DP equipment for docking assistance but may not qualify for NI logbook hours in normal operation — verify before starting your sea time count.
Training Providers
Approved DP training centres in the UK include:
- Seagull Maritime
- Kongsberg Maritime
- Warsash Maritime School
- Videotel / various other NI-approved centres
Prices vary. Book early — simulator slots fill quickly, particularly for DPO and DPU courses.
Career Value of DP Certification
A DPO adds approximately £60–£100/day to your market rate in offshore operations. DPU holders are significantly more competitive for senior officer and command positions on specialist vessels. With the offshore wind sector expanding rapidly and requiring DP-capable installation and service vessels, DP certification is increasingly valuable outside traditional oil and gas.
